The track operated without spectators and with a limited number of stable personnel for five racing days from March 14-22. All betting was conducted remotely. The track was ordered closed on a temporary basis by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health on March 27. :: To stay up to date, follow us on: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter The letter states that without revenue generated by racing, backstretch workers’ jobs are in jeopardy, which may force them to look elsewhere for employment and living quarters. “It is through this lens that the interdependent ecosystem that makes up the unique horse racing community, whether or not it is a sport you agree with, must be viewed,” the letter stated, in part. “Horse racing is a delicate, circular ecosystem and to destroy that now will lead to an unnecessary humanitarian and animal care crisis on top of what we are all already dealing with.” “While some industries are able to cease or pause operations completely, this is simply not an option for horse racing,” the letter concludes. “Now, perhaps more than ever in these difficult times, we must be mindful of our responsibility to prioritize the safety and well-being of the horses and those who care for them.” The entire letter is published on the track’s website, Santaanita.com.
