Strega holds off Totally in Charge in the Ashbridges Bay Stakes at Woodbine Nov 18 2022
Michael Burns Strega went wire to wire to win the Ashbridges Bay Stakes under Kazushi Kimura.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Strega notched her first stakes in front-running style under Kazushi Kimura in Friday’s $100,000 Ashbridges Bay at Woodbine.

Over a track that favored inside speed, Strega led through honest fractions in the 1 1/16-mile route for Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies.

Strega turned back a bid in the stretch from 22-1 outsider Totally in Charge to prevail by three-quarters of a length, in a time of 1:45.46.

My Girl Sky was a troubled third. She was followed by favored Talk to Ya Later, Pleasure’s Gold, Dixie Morning, and Well Actually.

A daughter of Silent Name, Strega ($5.70) earned $60,000 for owner Lanni Bloodstock and trainer Kevin Attard.

“In the summertime, we threw her in against the top 3-year-old fillies locally,” Attard said. “She ran really good in the Bison City Stakes, and almost hung on to win that. She’s back in Ontario-sired company, where she enjoys that a little bit more.

“The track playing for speed helps a horse like her. The gameplan was to go out there and try to dictate things.”

Lake Ontario

Full Screen rallied along the rail under a shrewd ride from Jeffrey Alderson to capture the $100,000 Lake Ontario Stakes for Ontario-sired male sophomores.

Full Screen ($11.60) scored by a neck over Hunt Master, who edged out Bossy Holiday for second. Favored Lac Macaza wound up fourth after a three-wide trip in the six-horse field.

The final time was 1:44.95.

A gelded son of Big Screen trained by Julie Belhumeur, Full Screen banked $60,000 for owner Nidel Charfi.

“At the quarter pole, I was searching for somewhere to go,” Alderson said. “The inside opened up and away he went.”
