Horseplayers have a judgment call to make with Street Warrior, the probable favorite in Saturday night’s 10,000 Lakes who will give up recency to all of his rivals but one in the $50,000 stakes at Canterbury. The 10,000 Lakes will share a card with the $50,000 Lady Slipper for fillies and mares. Both races will be run over six furlongs and are restricted to 3-year-olds and up bred in Minnesota. Street Warrior last raced in October, when he won an allowance over open company at Hawthorne. He led throughout for a 4 1/2-length victory, and the Beyer Speed Figure of 87 that he earned is the best last-race number in the 10,000 Lakes. For his first start since the fall, he’s turned in bullet works at Hawthorne and Canterbury. “There’s nothing like a recent race, that’s for sure, that’s proven, but he is a horse that’s fairly easy to get fit and keep fit,” said Joel Berndt, who trains Street Warrior for his breeder, Suzanne Stables. “He’s had a lot of training this spring in Kentucky, and then I took over at Hawthorne. We’ve got three solid five-eighths works in him, including one gate work, and he seems ready to go.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Street Warrior is part of a seven-horse field for the 10,000 Lakes. The group includes Thealligatorhunter, who has won this race at 4 and last year at 7; Distorted Pro, one of three capable starters for trainer Mac Robertson; and Towner Too, who is making his first start since August. Street Warrior will break from post 7 on Saturday under regular rider Constantino Roman. “He’s pretty versatile,” Berndt said. “He can go to the front. He can stalk. But I’m sure glad to have the seven [hole] rather than the one, or inside like that, because it forces your hand a little bit. But from the seven hole, you can spy the race. If nobody goes or if he outbreaks them, he can go, and if somebody decides to go, we can stay outside and get them to commit inside, you know? So, I love the draw, in other words.” Street Warrior is launching his 5-year-old season. The son of Barbados won the Minnesota Derby at 3 and last year was second by a neck to Distorted Pro in the Minnesota Sprint. “I think a 5-year-old year for a horse is a really good year,” Berndt said. Lady Slipper Thunders Rocknroll is back with fillies and mares and back at one turn in the Lady Slipper. When last seen racing under such conditions, she romped by 8 1/2 lengths in the $50,000 Wilma Mankiller on Jan. 12 at Will Rogers Downs. Thunders Rocknroll comes into the Lady Slipper off a fourth-place finish against males in the $100,000 Bosselman Pump & Pantry/Gus Fonner Stakes on April 25 at Fonner Park. She set the pace in the three-turn race run on a muddy, laboring track, finishing 3 3/4 lengths behind winner Cornishman. ◗ Sushi Man, who won last year’s Canterbury Derby and Minnesota Derby, launches his season in the fifth race, a one-mile allowance on the grass Saturday. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
