Turning into the stretch of Saturday’s $100,000 Gin Talking Stakes for juvenile fillies at Laurel Park, prohibitive favorite Street Lute looked on her way to a solid victory. But sometimes, it’s not that easy. Street Lute ($2.80) noticeably shortened stride in the final yards of the seven-furlong Gin Talking and just got her nose down in front of a rallying Fraudulent Charge. There was no show wagering in the Gin Talking following the scratches of Aug Lutes, Beautiful Grace, and Blissful Behavior, and Street Lute broke like a flash to lead the field of four through splits of 23.55 and 46.21 seconds. Jockey Xavier Perez took a couple of peeks back inside the quarter pole and Street Lute opened a four-length advantage after six furlongs in 1:10.45. :: Want to get your Past Performances for free? Out of Sorts finished 5 1/4 lengths behind in third. Champagne Toast scratched. Purchased for $10,500 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearling auction, Street Lute is a Maryland-bred daughter of Street Magician. The Gin Talking was her fifth victory from six starts. In addition, the Jerry Robb-trained filly has also captured the Small Wonder Stakes at Delaware as well as the Smart Halo and Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship at Laurel to stamp herself as the leading 2-year-old filly in the region. No Cents wins Heft Stakes No Cents survived a slow break as well as a lengthy stewards’ inquiry and jockey’s objection to win his fourth consecutive start in the $100,000 Heft Stakes for 2-year-olds at seven furlongs. Trained by Cal Lynch, No Cents ($3.40) was off a beat behind the field, but soon recovered to stalk the leaders from the outside as Kenny Had a Notion set fractions of 22.78 and 45.45 seconds. No Cents advanced three wide into prime contention turning into the stretch and was very late to change leads. Once he did switch at the furlong pole, he drifted in slightly on eventual third-place finisher Singlino before fending off a resurgent rail-skimming Kenny Had a Notion. The stewards took a look and Singlino’s rider, Jevian Toledo, claimed foul on the winner, but it was judged that No Cents committed no infraction. Ridden by Alex Cintron, substituting for Trevor McCarthy, No Cents completed the distance in 1:23.79 and finished a neck ahead of Kenny Had a Notion. A New Jersey homebred sired by Goldencents for Hope Jones and Isabelle de Tomaso, No Cents placed second in his career debut at Monmouth before beginning his current winning streak. The Heft is the colt’s second stakes victory following a score in the $100,000 James F. Lewis Stakes at Laurel on November 14. Miss Leslie notches third in row Miss Leslie made it three victories in a row after showing grit and determination to nab a thrilling edition of the $100,000 Anne Arundel County Stakes for juvenile fillies at 1 1/16 miles. Claimed by BB Horses and trainer Claudio Gonzalez for $25,000 on November 23, the Anne Arundel County was Miss Leslie's first try around two turns. Ridden by Roimes Chirinos, Miss Leslie ($7), a Paynter filly bred in Kentucky by Green Lantern Stables, settled in the second flight while between rivals on the first turn. “She broke pretty good and was relaxed,” Chirinos said in a post-race interview broadcast by Laurel. Up front, longshot Malibu Beauty controlled fractions of 24.24 and 48.43 seconds. Things began to heat up on the second bend, however, as Buckey’s Charm made a strong three-wide bid to challenge for the lead and favored The Grass is Blue began to gear up on the far outside from the back of the pack. Meanwhile, Miss Leslie continued to grind it out and gained on Buckey’s Charm when that one drifted out in midstretch. Miss Leslie surged through a tight spot to score by a head in 1:44.97 with The Grass Is Blue another head back in third. “She wasn’t scared at all,” Chirinos said. Shackqueenking wins first stakes Shackqueenking ($6.40) displayed versatility when earning his first stakes victory in the $100,000 Howard County Stakes for 2-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles. The Shackleford colt was a maiden graduate in gate-to-wire fashion at this distance on November 22, then finished a game second to favored Hello Hot Rod in an entry-level optional claimer in a one-turn mile earlier this month. In the Howard County, however, it was Ain’t Da Beer Cold who made the early running as jockey Angel Cruz aggressively hustled his mount to the lead and the rail on the first turn. Ain’t Da Beer Cold set fractions of 24.13 and 48.06 seconds while Shackqueenking, hung out three wide on the first turn, gradually crept up on the outside under Victor Rosales. Shackqueenking engaged Ain’t Da Beer Cold with three furlongs to run, poked a head in front swinging into the straight and only put that determined rival on ice in the final hundred yards to win by a desperate nose in 1:44.36. It was 3 1/2 lengths back to Erawan in third. Gun Law scratched. A $20,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, Shackqueenking is trained by Gary Capuano for Pocket 3’s Racing. He has a stout pedigree as his sire won the Preakness, while the dam is a half-sister to Redaspen, who took the Grade 2 La Prevoyante Stakes at 1 1/2 miles on turf at Calder.
