Street Fancy gets green light for Las Virgenes

ARCADIA, Calif. - Street Fancy was pronounced fit for her 3-year-old debut in the $300,000 Las Virgenes Stakes on Feb. 6 after a five-furlong workout in 1:01.80 at Santa Anita on Sunday.
Street Fancy has not raced since winning the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos on Dec. 12. Trained by Phil D’Amato, Street Fancy will face a stern test in the Grade 2 Las Virgenes Stakes at a mile. The race is also a target for Songbird, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2015.
D’Amato said that Street Fancy has thrived since the Starlet, which was run at 1 1/16 miles.
“She’s ready to go,” D’Amato said. “She hasn’t missed a beat since she won the Starlet. It’s maintenance mode from here on out.”
Owned by Agave Racing Stable, Street Fancy has won 2 of 3 starts and $223,200.
There were several prominent workouts at Santa Anita on Sunday, including Nyquist, the champion 2-year-old male of 2015. Trained by Doug O’Neill, Nyquist worked five furlongs in 1:00.60, according to O’Neill’s assistant and bloodstock advisor, Steve Rothblum.
“He did it on his own,” Rothblum said.
O’Neill did not attend the workout. He was traveling from California to Florida following the Eclipse Awards ceremony held on Saturday evening. Nyquist will have his 3-year-old debut in the $200,000 San Vicente Stakes at seven furlongs on Feb. 15.
Mor Spirit, the winner of the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity on Dec. 19, worked five furlongs in 1:01 under Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens. Trained by Bob Baffert, Mor Spirit will start in the $150,000 Robert Lewis Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on Feb. 6.
Sunday Rules, the winner of the Kalookan Queen Stakes for fillies and mares at 6 1/2 furlongs on Dec. 30, worked five furlongs in 1:01.80. She will start in Saturday’s $200,000 Santa Monica Stakes for fillies and mares at seven furlongs.
Other candidates for the race are Ben’s Duchess, Kyriaki, Living the Life, Prize Exhibit, and Tara’s Tango.
