Streaking fillies coast to easy wins

A couple of fast fillies kept winning streaks alive with impressive efforts in Sunday’s co-featured ninth and 11th races.
Boerne, a 3-year-old Texas-bred daughter of Fed Biz, used her abundant speed to post her third consecutive one-sided victory, a 4 1/4-length triumph over open allowance company going 6 1/2 furlongs for which she received a career-best 82 Beyer Speed Figure. Boerne has won her last three starts by a combined 15 lengths and is trained by Juan Avila, who sent out King Guillermo to finish second behind Nadal in the second division of the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby on Saturday at Oaklawn Park. Under Gulfstream Park’s latest coronavirus protocols, Avila is not permitted back on the grounds until he receives a negative coronavirus test upon his return to South Florida.

Like Boerne, Cory Gal also has been red hot of late, winning her third straight by wiring first-level optional-claiming competition for trainer Gustavo Delgado. Claimed for $16,000 on Feb. 23, the 4-year-old Cory Gal has won her last three races by a combined 12 3/4 lengths.
Both Boerne and Cory Gal were ridden to victory by Edgard Zayas, who posted a hat trick Sunday, having also won the fourth event aboard the George Weaver-trained first-time starter Competitive Saint. Zayas shared top honors for the day with Irad Ortiz Jr., who posted three winners for the second consecutive afternoon. Even Ortiz had to take a backseat in the jockeys’ room on Saturday to the four-bagger registered by Emisael Jaramillo.
Zayas and Jaramillo are third and fourth in the standings with 21 and 18 wins. Luis Saez sits atop the list with 33 victories. Ortiz, who got a late start at the session, is now sixth with 15 tallies from just 48 mounts heading into Thursday’s card.
