Three-year-old fillies have beaten older rivals in the last two runnings of the Grade 1, $150,000 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap for Quarter Horses, and Alice K White will try to keep the streak going on Saturday night at Los Alamitos. Blue Girls Too won the Vessels in 2007, and in 2008 Stylish Jess Br turned the trick. Alice K White is the only 3-year-old in the 10-horse field. The Vessels, which awards its winner a berth into the Grade 1, $750,000 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos on Dec. 12, drew a strong field. But Alice K White comes into the 400-yard race in top form. She won the Grade 1 Golden State Derby in her last start on Aug. 29. It was the fifth win from 10 starts for Alice K White, a daughter of First Down Dash who races for M J Farm and is trained by Michael Joiner. She has earned $263,342. Alice K White will be ridden by Cody Jensen Stylish Jess Br is back to defend her title. She comes into this year's running off an easy one-length win in the Grade 3 California Distaff Challenge Championship at Los Alamitos on Aug. 21. Paul Jones trains the filly for Benny Rossett. Clydette Mia has won her last five races, but the Vessels will be her first out since July 2008. All of the wins in Clydette Mia's streak have come at Los Alamitos. Also in the field are Answer the Dream, who won back-to-back stakes at Remington Park for Jones, and Terrific Energy, a Grade 1 winner at Los Alamitos in January. Terrific Energy did not race again until August when she finished second to Stylish Jess Br in the California Distaff Challenge. Terrific Energy, who is 5 for 10, races for Parsons Family Trust and is trained by Christopher O'Dell.
