LEXINGTON, Ky. – Trainer Brian Lynch sent out two runners in Saturday's Grade 2, $500,000 Appalachian Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on the Keeneland turf. One was Sister Troienne, a three-time stakes winner sent away as the favorite looking to rebound after her five-race winning streak came to a narrow end last out. But Lynch also saddled Storm's Wake, overlooked after being beaten just three-quarters of a length when third behind Lion Lake and her stablemate Sister Troienne in the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride. "She's been knocking at the door," Lynch said. "She just seemed, after her last start at Gulfstream, she really just seemed to blossom. I mean, everything started to go her way. She's been in the feed tub, everything come round at the right time." :: Keeneland Spring Meet! Get DRF Past Performances, picks, news, and more. The timing was just right, as Storm's Wake ($45.36) came flying down the center under Joel Rosario to be up by a neck in a classic turf finish with horses spread across the course and the top five separated by less than two lengths. "I just had a feeling she'd appreciate the long stretch here, and if she got a bit of pace to run at, she'd run on," Lynch said. "She could be effective." Coming to the quarter pole, Storm's Wake was still ninth of 10 as up front, pacesetter Counterbalance, who had ticked off the half in 47.60 seconds and six furlongs in 1:11.93, was about to give way. Sister Troienne had moved along steadily, and briefly put a head in front, with Lynch saying he "thought she was in the perfect spot." But a host of pursuers was quickly upon her, including her stablemate, coming fastest of all in about the nine-path. Storm's Wake was up at the wire by a neck over Imaginationthelady, winner of the Grade 2 Jessamine on this course last fall, and who had also rallied from well off the pacel. Imaginationthelady was a head in front of Lion Lake, who was third by a neck over Just Aloof, who waited before making a bid inside into the stretch. Sister Troienne was a length back in fifth. The time for the mile on turf rated firm was 1:40.06. Storm's Wake, who races as a homebred for William Werner, won her first two starts in Kentucky last year before finishing sixth in the Our Dear Peggy at Gulfstream. She had been chasing her Sister Troienne in Florida this winter, finishing third behind her in the Ginger Brew and fourth in the Sweetest Chant before her third to Lion Lake and Sister Troienne in the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride. Saturday, it was her turn for a graded stakes win. She'll look for another, as Lynch indicated the Grade 2, $600,000 Edgewood Stakes on the Kentucky Oaks undercard would be her next target. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
