Stormin the Jewels won the fifth stakes race of his career Saturday, when he overtook Mr. Mooch for a length victory in the $70,000 Casey Darnell at the Downs at Albuquerque. It was another 2 1/4 lengths back in third to Red Zenon. The Darnell was a 5 1/2-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up bred in New Mexico. The race is named for the late breeder, owner, and trainer of both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses who was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2009. Stormin the Jewels ($19.40) was prominent throughout, with Mr. Mooch leading the field through an opening quarter in 22.37 seconds. Stormin the Jewels engaged that one through a half-mile in 46.04 seconds before going on to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:03.59. Jansen Melancon was aboard the winner for trainer Fred Danley. Stormin the Jewels is a gelded son of Attila’s Storm who races for J & SM Inc.
