Storm Warrior wins Rio Grande Senor Futurity
Storm Warrior remained undefeated in three starts by running down 6-5 favorite Diabolical King in Sunday’s $194,672 Rio Grande Senor Futurity for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds at Ruidoso Downs.
Storm Warrior ($14.80), ridden by Isaias Cardenas for trainer Ross Amestoy, rallied along the rail to draw clear by 1 1/4 lengths over pacesetter Diabolical King. The maiden Stormin the Jewels was another length back in third.
Storm Warrior, a half-brother to Spartan Warrior, the runner-up in this same stakes in 2010, covered 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.77.
Also on the card, Im a Moon Quest led a trio of longshots across the wire in the Grade 1, $379,896 Zia Quarter Horse Futurity.
Ridden by Omar Reyes for trainer Michael Joiner, Im a Moon Quest ($30.80) got up by a nose over 23-1 outsider Wahoo Raider by running 400 yards in 20.17 seconds. Jameson Jr, a 10-1 shot, got third by a nose over morning-line favorite Carson City Girl.
The $2 trifecta returned $3,974.40.
