Stopshoppingdebbie may have run her last race
ARCADIA, Calif. – The eight-time stakes winner from Emerald Downs in Washington finished fifth as the 2-1 favorite in Saturday’s Grade 3 L.A. Woman Stakes over six furlongs and bled through Lasix, trainer Ton Wenzel said Sunday.
Wenzel said tentative plans are for Stopshoppingdebbie to be retired at the end of the year and that she may not start again.
“Things didn’t go our way,” he said. “I don’t want to make too many excuses. She had a minor cough before the race, and we had a bit of a rush job to get her ready. It was a pretty tough race on her. She bled a little through the Lasix. Going to the Breeders’ Cup after a race like that is probably not the race to run in.”
Wenzel said owner Jerre Paxton, who races as Northwest Farm, typically races fillies through their 4-year-old season before retirement. The 4-year-old Stopshoppingdebbie has won 9 of 10 starts and earned $249,728. Her eight stakes wins at Emerald Downs ranged in distances from six furlongs to 1 1/8 miles.
Wenzel said the L.A. Woman “might be” Stopshoppingdebbie’s last start.
“I wish I could have run a little better for this race, but I’m glad we tried it.”
