The conclusion of Kentucky Downs weekend stakes action did not sit well with jockey Jose Ortiz and trainer Mike Maker. Under Who’s Radar, Ortiz up for Maker, crossed the line first but was disqualified for interference in the Juvenile Sprint, worth a shade less than $900,000. Ouch. But Stir Crazy could salve that wound in the Thursday feature at Kentucky Downs, the $500,000 One Dreamer Stakes. The One Dreamer, carded for a mile and 70 yards, is restricted to older fillies and mares who haven’t won a sweepstakes during 2024. Stir Crazy, with better luck in her most recent outing, wouldn’t qualify, but since she finished second, beaten a head as the best horse in the Indiana General Assembly Distaff on July 6, here she is in the One Dreamer, an appealing 12-1 on the morning line, Ortiz up for Maker. Stir Crazy is among 15 entered in a race that can accommodate a dozen, and almost certainly loses at least one horse, Regal Realm (who ran last weekend) from the field’s main body. That would let in Magic Lute, whose presence must be accounted for following back-to-back turf blowouts for trainer Brittany Russell. :: Kentucky Downs Package Available Now - Get All Access PPs, Picks, Players Guide for just $20! While the morning line pegs Magic Lute at 4-1, it’s hard to see her that low and Stir Crazy so high. Magic Lute won soft races at Delaware and most recently at Colonial, beating just four there in a second-level allowance. Stir Crazy won back-to back allowance-level races in May and June at Churchill. Ortiz rode those races but wasn’t at Horseshoe Indianapolis on July 6, when Stir Crazy found herself stuck behind a wall of horses while full of run at the furlong grounds. By the time her rider found room down on the fence, it was too late, though Stir Crazy wins that day in one more jump, and she quickly galloped out far in front. On the one hand, Maker clearly pointed late-blooming 6-year-old Stir Crazy to this spot, since she got back on the work tab July 20 and has breezed consistently. On the other, Maker is 2 for 65 over the last 12 days, and at Kentucky Downs, thanks to the Sunday disqualification, he’s lost with his last 30 runners dating to September 2023. Maker also runs Anatolian, who has higher-level form than Stir Crazy but hit her peak in longer races. Papilio at 7-2 occupies the position of morning-line favorite. Her trainer, Mark Casse, won the 2021 One Dreamer with Hendy Woods but hasn’t had a winner in nine starts so far at the meet, and Papilio’s deep-closing style goes against the appeared bias during the first week of the meet. More appealing, and the more likely favorite, is the Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained Sister Lou Ann, the 2023 One Dreamer heroine. Sister Lou Ann’s slop flop last out at Saratoga easily is forgiven, though it was Jose Ortiz who rode her to victory a year ago at Kentucky Downs, with Irad Ortiz Jr. named Thursday. Olivia Maralda has a less obvious excuse for her poor last-start performance, a dull last-place finish in the Matchmaker at Monmouth. Her race two back, a solid second in the Grade 1 Gamely, stamps her as a major player if she can get back to it. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
