OZONE PARK, N.Y. – There are a few intriguing elements to Friday’s sixth race at Aqueduct. One is that three of the eight horses are riding three-race winning streaks. Another is the race is run at the seldom-used distance of 1 1/4 miles, for which Damascus still holds the track record (1:59.20 set in July 1968). No one will confuse any of these runners with Damascus, but Unbridled Daddy, Charming Indy, and Kerry Boy are all in career form for this starter allowance open to 3-year-olds and up who have started for a claiming tag of $16,000 or less in 2017. Unbridled Daddy, who competed in seven stakes his career, plummeted to a $10,500 claimer in August, a race he won at Monmouth Park by 6 1/2 lengths. Unbridled Daddy, trained by Greg Sacco, has since won allowance races at Penn National and Laurel and returns to New York where he began his career in the barn of Todd Pletcher. Sacco said Unbridled Daddy “was cut out to be a nice horse” but had a bleeding problem. Still, when Sacco resolved that issue the horse did not fire in races on turf and only turned things around when Sacco put him back on dirt. Sacco said when he ran Unbridled Daddy for $10,500 at Monmouth in August, he told jockey Chris DeCarlo to put him on the lead. That style worked. “Now, he’s a front-running dirt horse,” Sacco said. “He was a closing turf horse.” :: Save on PPs, digital subscriptions, and more! :: Get PPs, analysis, and watch Saturday's Tampa Bay Downs card live DeCarlo is back on Unbridled Daddy on Friday, and he figures to be on the lead or sitting just off of Parx Racing shipper Clowney. Charming Indy, trained by Chris Englehart, has won three consecutive races at Finger Lakes. In October 2016, Charming Indy won an off-the-turf race going 1 1/8 miles at Belmont by 10 lengths. Englehart believes his charge is better now than he was then, especially mentally. “Before when he was running he was intimidated by other horses around him and he’d seem to do a little better if he was up on the front end,” Englehart said. “Now, he’s not intimidated by the other horses and he’s a better horse by being able to rate more early.” Manny Franco rides Charming Indy from post 5. Kerry Boy, trained by Gabriel Goodwin, also has won three consecutive races at Finger Lakes, including a New York-bred allowance on Nov. 28 going 1 1/8 miles. “He seems to enjoy the distance a lot,” Goodwin said. “He seems to settle a lot better in race. If he can settle, he has awesome speed to close. I think he should run good.” Mike Luzzi will ride Kerry Boy from the rail.
