Starship Impulsive’s four-race winning streak came to an end when she switched to synthetic against older rivals last month, but she should find herself right at home in the $75,000 Cellars Shiraz Stakes on Friday at Gulfstream Park. Back against other 3-year-old fillies, she will return to the grass as a likely favorite in the field of 11.“She’s doing excellent, couldn’t ask more,” trainer Steven Dwoskin said. “You know, she gives us everything we ask for and looks like she enjoys doing it.”After three straight victories against 3-year-old fillies between April and June, including two in $75,000 stakes, Dwoskin gave Starship Impulsive a short break over the summer and brought her back in a $70,000 handicap in August. In her first race against older fillies and mares, she went off at 4-5 odds and improved to win by a head over Ashima, a 4-year-old filly with nine victories in 19 starts. She earned a much-improved 89 Beyer Speed Figure for the victory.Because she was in such strong form, Dwoskin decided to take a risk and switched her to the Tapeta for the $75,000 Ginger Punch on Sept. 20. In a tougher nine-horse field on a surface she had only tried once, in a dead-last effort in March, the Improbable filly ran on well but had to settle for second by a half-length. The winner that day, Leo Toro, is undefeated in three starts since trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. claimed her in February. The waters are getting deeper as more trainers ship their runners south for the winter, but Dwoskin said that she is “meant for turf” and expects her to be ready for another test on her preferred surface at Gulfstream. In her last two starts, she has done solid running while tracking an early leader, a marked change from her pacesetting style earlier this year.“She’s settling down and getting to know what she’s supposed to do,” Dwoskin said. “Just acting exactly like you would want any horse at this stage of her career.”Joseph won’t be bringing Leo Toro back for a rematch in the Cellars Shiraz, but the trainer is well stocked with three fillies in the stakes field. The standout of the trio is 3-year-old filly Ramsey Pond, who returned from a layoff of nearly five months in September and finished second in a $200,000 allowance at Kentucky Downs.Bellavinino and Brown Sugar, both 3-year-old fillies, also have outside shots for the trainer. Brown Sugar will make her first start for Joseph after three starts on dirt for Brad Cox, while Bellavinino has only run once since a nine-length defeat to Starship Impulsive in the $75,000 Martha Washington in June.Mischief in Motion, winner of the $150,000 Christiana last time out at Delaware Park, will ship back to Florida for trainer Mike Trombetta after making her debut at Gulfstream in January. Since switching to turf in August, she has earned two victories in three starts and earned an 80 Beyer Speed for her first stakes victory last month.
