SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Star of Mystery was a handful prior to the start of last month’s Grade 1 Jaipur Stakes, in which the 3-year-old filly expended too much energy and ultimately finished third against some of the top male turf sprinters in North America. On Sunday, in the post parade of the Quick Call Stakes, jockey Flavien Prat was worried that Star of Mystery may have been too docile prior to the race. Turns out, Star of Mystery was just conserving her energy for the stretch run, where she whistled by four of her male rivals in the lane, the last being Mansa Musa, to win the Grade 3, $175,000 Quick Call by 1 1/2 lengths at Saratoga. Mansa Musa, who chased the pacesetting No Nay Mets for the opening three furlongs, settled for second, 2 1/4 lengths in front of Fandom. American Rascal, Smokey Smokey, Set and No Nay Mets completed the order of finish. Apollo Ten and Feltrinelli scratched, as they finished first and fourth, respectively, in Sunday’s $100,000 My Frenchman Stakes at Monmouth. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! She obliged. “She just switched off so nice, I was a bit worried that she was going to sleep,” Prat said. “But she was just an old pro today.” The victory was the fifth from 11 starts for Star of Mystery ($3.30) and her third against males, all this year. She was entered in Friday’s Coronation Cup Stakes against 3-year-old fillies but her connections, trainer Charlie Appleby and Godolphin Racing, felt this was a better spot. “At first we were pretty set on Friday,” assistant trainer Chris Connett said. “When he saw the fields, he was happy to get the weight allowance and face the boys.” Star of Mystery was five lengths off the pace after the first three furlongs as No Nay Mets rocketed off to a 2 1/2-length lead under Irad Ortiz Jr., chased by Mansa Musa. Prat rallied Star of Mystery four wide for the stretch drive and, when straightened out, she kicked hard, completing 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:00.97. “I was pleased with the position, she jumped forward where I wasn’t going to be too far back and she was traveling well all the way around,” Prat said. “When I tipped her out she did the rest.” The win capped a huge opening week for Prat, who won seven races - including Saturday’s Grade 1 Diana - and sits atop the jockey standings after one week. “I’m very grateful, I had a great opening week,” Prat said. “It’s only the first week, it’s a long meet, but it’s always better to start this way.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
