Star mares arrive at Fasig-Tipton for Tuesday night's sale

Five fillies and mares arrived at Fasig-Tipton's Newtown Paddocks headquarters in Lexington, Ky., on Sunday night, a day after contesting Breeders' Cup races at Del Mar, and about 48 hours before they were to walk through the auction ring as star attractions.

Shedaresthedevil, Caravel, Kimari, Proud Emma, and Queen Supreme are all cataloged as racing or broodmare prospects at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall selected mixed sale, dubbed the "night of the stars," on Tuesday evening. All were still scheduled to be offered, accounting for outs reported to the auction company through Monday morning.

Shedaresthedevil is one of the most anticipated offerings of the auction, despite finishing sixth after racing near a radioactive early pace in the Breeders' Cup Distaff that scorched all the participants, with heavy favorite Letruska succumbing to finish 10th.

Shedaresthedevil, a 4-year-old Daredevil filly, will be consigned as a racing or broodmare prospect by Hunter Valley Sales, as agent for her racing ownership partnership of Flurry Racing Stables, Qatar Racing, and Big Aut Farms.

"I thought she ran a good race," trainer Brad Cox said. "I guess you could say she ran the best race of the speed horses. She was the one that faltered the least amount. I do feel like she was really ready to run.

“We’re excited about going to the sale with her. It’s a possibility, you know, someone could purchase her and she could return to racing. She has no issues and is a very sound filly. We’ll see how it plays out on Tuesday for her.”

Shedaresthedevil has earned more than $2.3 million. Her seven graded stakes victories are highlighted by a score in the 2020 Kentucky Oaks over eventual champions Swiss Skydiver and Gamine. She added additional Grade 1 wins this season in the La Troienne and the Clement Hirsch.

“In this business, you have to lead with your head and not your heart,” co-owner Staton Flurry said. “There’s a lot of money on the table, so I think we’re doing the right thing. But, it will be bittersweet.”

Proud Emma, fifth in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, is being offered at Fasig-Tipton as a racing or broodmare prospect out of the Breeders' Cup, with her consignment handled as agent for her racing connections by St. George Sales. Kimari and Caravel, seventh and 12th, respectively, in the Turf Sprint, will be offered by Eaton Sales and Elite Sales. Queen Supreme, 12th in the Filly and Mare Turf, is on offer from Bluewater Sales.

In addition to the fillies and mares who exit the Breeders' Cup, both the Fasig-Tipton mixed sale and the Keeneland November breeding stock sale - which begins the following day, on Nov. 10 - boast catalog updates from the progeny of broodmares on offer, or by the half-siblings of weanlings. The broodmare Mongolian Changa, selling at Fasig-Tipton with Taylor Made Sales, got another update from her Grade 1-winning son Medina Spirit on Saturday night when he was second in the Breeders' Cup Classic. Mongolian Changa is selling in foal to Not This Time - who, like Medina Spirit's sire Protonico, is a son of Giant's Causeway.

Turning the page to Keeneland November the following day, the cross-town auction company was set to offer three horses who started in the Breeders' Cup, as of outs through Monday morning - Charmaine's Mia, Horologist, and Stolen Base.

Charmaine's Mia, set to be offered as a racing or broodmare prospect by Taylor Made during Wednesday's opening Book 1 session, leads the group after outrunning her odds to finish third in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. The daughter of The Factor, a three-time graded stakes winner earlier this year, was third at the Breeders' Cup as the third-longest shot on the board. Charmaine's Mia's winning half-sister Boatloadofnerve will also be offered at Keeneland as a racing or broodmare prospect by Taylor Made.

Horologist, a six-time stakes winner nearing millionaire status, will also be offered by Taylor Made during Book 1, after finishing ninth in the Distaff.

Keeneland November's horses of racing age section, which will be the focus of the sale's closing session on Nov. 19, gets added luster from a graded stakes-placed juvenile in Stolen Base. Seventh in the Juvenile Turf, he is on offer from Bluewater Sales.

Weanling half-siblings to a pair of Breeders' Cup-placed fillies are on offer at Keeneland. Grade 1 winner Juju's Map, second in the Juvenile Fillies, has a half-sister from the first crop of Audible in the Taylor Made consignment. Haughty, third in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, has a half-brother by Hard Spun in the Taylor Made consignment.

Several broodmares selling in foal at Keeneland are also half-siblings to horses who won or placed in Breeders' Cup races. The group is led by Look Me Over, a half-sister to Juvenile victor Corniche, in the Hunter Valley consignment. Charge It Please, a half-sister to Sprint third-place finisher Following Sea, is in the Taylor Made consignment. Broodmare half-sisters to Mile second- and third-place finishers Smooth Like Strait and Ivar, respectively, are also in the mix, as Smooth and Sassy is with Columbiana Farm and Hydranix is with Hidden Brook.
