Star European miler Bow Echo retired

Bow Echo, the star 3-year-old miler based in England, has been retired from racing with an unspecified injury.

Trainer George Boughey released the news Tuesday that Bow Echo’s undefeated career would end after six starts, three at age 2 and three more this year. Bow Echo capped his 2-year-old campaign winning the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes, and the colt won three Group 1s this year: the English 2000 Guineas, the St. James’s Palace, and, most recently, the Sussex against older horses, becoming the first horse since the great Frankel in 2011 to capture those three races as a 3-year-old.

The Sussex is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series and Bow Echo had been expected to race in the Breeders’ Cup Mile following a start in France.

A homebred, Bow Echo – by Night of Thunder out of the Invincible Spirit mare Aristocratic Lady -- campaigned for the executors of the late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid al Maktoum.
