ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Woodbine’s new $5 minimum pick three, with a 15 percent takeout, on select multi-stakes days begins Saturday and encompasses the three graded events on the card – the Belle Mahone, Eclipse, and Jacques Cartier. Stanley House is back to doing what he does best in the Grade 2, $175,000 Eclipse going 1 1/16 miles. The consistent and versatile 6-year-old took the 1 1/4-mile Niagara Stakes on the grass last August. Off a five-month layoff here May 2, he made an early move into contention before fading to fifth in a seven-furlong conditioned allowance/optional claimer under regular rider Leo Salles. Trainer Mike DePaulo said Stanley House wintered in Florida. “We turned him out for a bit [in Ocala],” DePaulo said. “We ended up sending him to Gulfstream and he had a bunch of works there. We were hoping to get a start in, but that didn’t happen. We entered him here in a three-other-than going a mile and a sixteenth. They made it seven-eighths and we decided to run. “He hadn’t run short in four years. He was a little closer to the pace [than usual]. It just didn’t work out. He came back and trained well, but he’s always been a good work horse. He’s doing good.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Trained by Kevin Attard, Jokestar ran second in back-to-back Grade 3 stakes on the Tapeta last fall, in the Autumn and Valedictory. He ran two super races on the dirt over the winter, winning the nine-furlong Post Time Stakes despite a troubled trip at Laurel Park before a close second to Parchment Party in the 1 1/2-mile Temperence Hill Stakes at Oaklawn Park. “He’s really come into his own,” Attard said. “We have always liked him. It was never a case of if he was going to be the horse we felt he could be, but always a case of when. “His last two races [were] outstanding. He’s added a new dimension to his game, where he’s shown he can be a lot closer to the pace. He’s always been a strong finisher and that hasn’t changed. He still has that impressive late gear.” Maycocks Bay ships in from Maryland to compete for the first time on Tapeta, over which he has worked at the Fair Hill training center. The speedy 5-year-old most recently finished third in a third-level allowance on the grass at Keeneland for trainer Mike Stidham. Trainer Mark Casse entered Grade 3 victor Swift Deliver and Tosen Wish in the Eclipse. In the $150,000 Belle Mahone for fillies and mares, a Grade 3 going 1 1/16 miles which kicks off the all-stakes pick three, he sends out No Time and Elysian Field, two Woodbine Oaks winners who are both coming off the sidelines. Casse is particularly excited with last year’s Oaks winner No Time, who has been working up a storm. “We think she is training better than ever,” Casse said. “I’m excited to get her started.” Elysian Field, victorious in the 2023 Oaks before a solid second in the King’s Plate, has been out of action since a non-effort in the Grade 2 Presque Isle Masters in September. Hurricane Clair is starting for the first time since her gate-to-wire score in the Dec. 13 La Prevoyante Stakes for Ontario-sired stock. She changed trainers over the winter, going from Marty Drexler to Mike Wright Jr. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  Stylish Sue could vie for the lead with Hurricane Clair. Trained by Joe Sharp, the need-the-lead type took the Latonia Stakes two back on Tapeta at her Turfway Park base and is coming off a fading fifth in the Grade 3 Modesty at Churchill Downs. Deloraine, another Turfway shipper, has been in poor form since last spring while campaigned sporadically by trainer Eoin Harty. DePaulo entered longshot Equitas, who is exiting a fourth-place finish in a nine-furlong allowance on the Keeneland grass. “We’re just hoping to get some black type,” DePaulo said. “She ran fourth in a two-other-than at Keeneland. That was a tough race. The horse who won it ran a 93 Beyer the start before.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
