Stakes-winning Texas-bred Supermason retired at 7

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Supermason, who registered six of his seven stakes wins at Lone Star Park, has been retired, owner Brad Grady said Friday.
The 7-year-old won 13 of 39 starts overall and earned $417,455. He is a Texas-bred gelding by Grasshopper.
“Supermason was our family’s first stakes winner, on Valentine’s Day at Sam Houston,” said Grady, who raced Grade 1 winner Girvin. “He’s special in that regard. He’s named after our young son.”
Supermason will make an appearance during the Stars of Texas Day on Sunday at Lone Star. He is scheduled to stand in the winner’s circle and gallop by the finish line in a ceremony being coordinated by Lone Star television host Dave Appleton. Supermason is tied for most stakes wins at Lone Star, according to track spokeswoman Diantha Brazzell.
Grady said Supermason – who in his last start was fifth in the Wayne Hanks Memorial on June 23 at Lone Star – had not matched his form from a year ago, when he went 3 for 5, and the decision was made to retire him.
“Supermason will go to our farm in Florida, Grand Oaks,” Grady said. “We’ll let him down for six months and bring him back to our Texas farm. My wife will do something with him, maybe dressage. That’s what the plan is.”
Supermason was trained for the bulk of his career by Bret Calhoun. He was a three-time winner of the Premiere Stakes at Lone Star and won two runnings of the Assault. The Assault is being run Sunday, and Supermason’s full brother, the stakes winner Shotsoft, is part of the field of 12.
