Stakes winners Vast, Spanish Point return from layoffs in allowance

Listed stakes winners Vast and Spanish Point head a field of six entered in an open-condition allowance race for 3-year-old fillies Sunday at Gulfstream Park.
Vast, a daughter of Lea trained by Bill Mott, won a maiden race at Saratoga on debut last July 12 and the Hollywood Wildcat Stakes at Monmouth Park in September from four starts as a 2-year-old. She has not raced since being disqualified from third to fourth in the one-mile Tempted Stakes on Nov. 1 at Aqueduct.

This is the fourth straight race in which Vast has drawn the rail, but she showed in the Hollywood Wildcat, ridden that day by Joe Bravo, that she could handle it.
“Jersey Joe let them go and he joined them on the turn,” Mott said. “He didn’t panic, and it worked out well.”
Tyler Gaffalione is named to ride Vast on Sunday, and with plenty of speed signed on in the six-horse field, Vast could work out a similar trip.
Spanish Point may appreciate some pace in front of her as she returns from a four-month layoff for trainer Jorge Abreu. Spanish Point, who breaks from post 3, came from off the pace to win her debut last fall at Belmont and then was up close when winning the House Party. She hasn’t run since a third-place finish in the Glitter Woman Stakes on Jan. 4 at Gulfstream.
Boerne, a front-running winner of an allowance race here April 11, and Sweet Mia, runner-up going a mile last out, should provide the pace.
Naked Avenger and Velvet Crush complete the field.
