Stakes winner Cairo Memories euthanized due to illness

Three-time stakes winner Cairo Memories was recently euthanized in Kentucky because of illness, trainer Bob Hess Jr. said Tuesday.
Cairo Memories was transferred from California in early November to be sold at the Fasig-Tipton November auction, but was withdrawn because of illness. The 3-year-old filly’s condition deteriorated through the month.
“She got sick on the flight,” Hess said. “She left in good shape. She seemed fine and then I got a call from my consignor.
“It unraveled in front of us.”
Hess said Cairo Memories had issues with laminitis during the illness.
Owned by David Bernsen and Schroeder Farm, Cairo Memories won 4 of 10 starts and earned $420,500. Purchased for $50,000 as a yearling, Cairo Memories won the Surfer Girl Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita in October 2021 and two months later was second in the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos.

Earlier this year, Cairo Memories won two Grade 3 stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Santa Anita in consecutive starts – the Providencia Stakes in April and the Honeymoon Stakes in May.
By Cairo Prince, Cairo Memories later finished third in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks in August and was fifth of 11 in the Grade 3 Autumn Miss Stakes on Oct. 29 at Santa Anita in her final start.
“She had tons of class,” Hess said. “She loved what she was born to do.”
