Stakes-a-day meet capped by $100k trio

Fairplex Park will offer one Thoroughbred stakes per day during its upcoming meeting at the Los Angeles County Fair on Sept. 7-24.

The fair runs 18 consecutive days, and has shifted its meeting by one day this year. In recent years, the fair opened on a Thursday and ran for 18 days before finishing on a Sunday. This year, the fair opens on a Friday, leaving one dark day after the closing day at Del Mar.

There have been several minor revisions to the stakes schedule, mostly the shifting of dates for stakes. For example, the Bustles and Bows Stakes, which has been run on opening day in past years, will be run on the first Thursday, Sept. 13. Consequently, the Foothill Stakes for 3-year-old sprinters is the lone stakes on opening day.

One stakes has been deleted. The Afflerbaugh Stakes for older horses over 1 1/16 miles will not be run this year.

The stakes highlights are three $100,000 races on the closing weekend, foremost among them the Ralph Hinds Pomona Invitational Handicap over about 1 1/8 miles. The $100,000 Pomona Derby takes its traditional place on the final Saturday. The fair ends on Sept. 23, but racing will continue the following day with the Governor's Cup Handicap for older sprinters.
