Stahl to leave Jockey Club

Hans Stahl, the president and chief operating officer of The Jockey Club, will retire at the end of 2002 and be replaced by Alan Marzelli, The Jockey Club's current chief financial officer, The Jockey Club announced on Wednesday.

Stahl's resignation will end a 20-year career at The Jockey Club, which he joined in February 1983 as the director of operations. Stahl was named president and chief operating officer, a new position, in March 1995.

Under Stahl, The Jockey Club led an effort to establish an industry-owned data base of racing information. That company, formed in partnership with racetracks and called Equibase, now collects the majority of information that appears in past performances.

The Jockey Club also began establishing parentage by blood-typing under Stahl, and it is now moving into DNA-typing. The new procedures are said to insure the accuracy of parentage for the breed.
