Stablemates run one-two

CALGARY, Alberta - Trainer Don Gilkyson provided the exactor in Monday's Ken Pearson Memorial at Stampede Park, the second time he has turned the trick in a filly and mare stakes at this meet.

This time the winner was Slewability ($30.60), avenging her defeat to stablemate Little Lolitta in the M.R. Jenkins Memorial two weeks earlier.

Little Lolitta, bet down to 1-2 following her nine-length romp in the Jenkins, set moderate fractions of 23.60 seconds, 47, and 1:12 Monday while under firm restraint from rider Perry Winters, but was unable to hold off Slewability in the final furlong.

"I thought I had plenty of horse left going into the last turn," said Winters, "but Slewability was too good for us today."

Jockey Alex Ferris had Slewability in perfect striking position throughout the early stages of the one-mile handicap. Slewability moved to engage the leader on the final turn, and was a head in front at the furlong pole en route to a two-length victory. The final time was 1:37.60 and the Gilkyson exactor returned $48.

Next up for Gilkyson's two female stars is the 1 1/16-mile Duchess of York here June 8.

* Leading rider Rickey Walcott received a three-day suspension for his ride aboard They Call Me Cody in last Sunday's Teeworth Plate. Walcott's mount interfered with Kid Copper and was disqualified from third and placed seventh.

* Heir to Spare, a double winner at the meet, drew the rail and heads a field of nine in Friday's featured seventh race. An $11,000 claim by trainer Red Smith in his last outing, Heir to Spare returns to face similar company with Richard Hamel up.
