St. Nicholas Abbey’s recovery in “good form”

St. Nicholas Abbey, the Coolmore Grade/Group 1 winner now recovering from two recent surgeries, appears to be making good progress nearly two weeks after colic and pastern-fusion procedures in Ireland, according to Coolmore.

The global breeding and racing conglomerate tweeted Friday that the 6-year-old Montjeu horse “remains in good form” at Fethard Equine Hospital in Co. Tipperary, Ireland, where veterinary staff had replaced his fiberglass cast.

“Surgeons Dr. Tom O’Brien and Dr. Ger Kelly were happy with the wound and alignment of joints, which are as good as can be expected at this time,” Coolmore tweeted. “Consulting USA surgeons Dr. [Dean] Richardson and Dr. [Nate] Slovis have both reassessed St. Nicholas Abbey during the week and are happy with his progress.”

St. Nicholas Abbey fractured a pastern on July 23 during morning work at Ballydoyle and underwent surgery the following day. On July 26, Coolmore said St. Nicholas Abbey underwent colic surgery after a “shutdown” of his cecum.

St. Nicholas Abbey won six Grade or Group 1 races, including the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Turf, and is an English and Irish highweight.
