St Anthony rallies past Highland Ghost in Alcatraz Stakes
St Anthony rallied wide through the final furlong to win Sunday’s $75,900 Alcatraz Stakes for 3-year-old turf milers at Golden Gate Fields in his stakes debut.
St Anthony ($7) finished three-quarters of a length in front of 2-1 Highland Ghost, who set the pace. Ridden by Pedro Terrero, St Anthony was timed in 1:37.35 and earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 78.
Terrero had St Anthony toward the back of the field through the first six furlongs while Highlang Ghost set fractions of 23.17 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 47 for a half-mile.
Highland Ghost maintained his advantage despite pressure from several rivals in the stretch, but could not hold off St Anthony.
Highland Ghost finished a head in front of 12-1 Chief Wild Eagle.
St Anthony, a gelding by Noble Mission, races for owner and breeder Alice Bamford and trainer Neil Drysdale. St Anthony has won 2 of 6 starts and earned $73,040.
St Anthony won a maiden special weight race at Golden Gate Fields in his third start on March 11 in a one-mile race on the synthetic main track. St Anthony was later fifth and fourth in allowance races at Santa Anita in April and earlier this month leading to the start in the Alcatraz.
