Sr. Quisqueyano will steer away from tougher rivals

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Peter Walder said he has no immediate plans for Sr. Quisqueyano, the 20-1 winner of the Sunshine Millions Classic on Saturday at Gulfstream Park, although he said the Donn Handicap is out of the question.
“We’re just enjoying this one,” Walder said Monday. “We’re in Miami for the winter, right? It’s a good time and place to enjoy a victory like this.”
Sr. Quisqueyano, claimed for $62,500 in his prior start by the Loooch Racing Stables of Ron Paolucci, tied his career-high 101 Beyer Speed Figure with his half-length score over Grade 2 winner East Hall. Walder said he won’t necessarily look to run the 5-year-old horse back at Gulfstream, although the Skip Away on the March 28 Florida Derby undercard is one long-term possibility.
“I sure don’t want to run back in the Donn,” he said, referring to the first major handicap event of the year here Feb. 7. “I’m not looking to chase those kinds of horses – I’m looking to run away from them.”
Meanwhile, one of Sr. Quisqueyano’s beaten opponents in the Classic, Wildcat Red, will be sidelined indefinitely with what is hoped to be a minor injury to a hind leg, according to trainer Jose Garoffalo.
“It’s not going to be a career-ending injury,” Garoffalo told Gulfstream publicity Monday.
Wildcat Red, an earner of $936,875 from 14 career starts, ran uncharacteristically poorly when fading to fifth in the six-horse field, beaten 19 1/4 lengths. Garoffalo said something obviously was wrong with the 4-year-old colt, and after post-race inspection, it was determined Wildcat Red might have pulled or torn a muscle or ligament in the leg. He is being sent to the Palm Beach Equine Clinic for further diagnosis, and Garoffalo is hoping to have results of the examination by the weekend.
Thirtysevenliveson to sidelines
Thirtysevenliveson, a half-brother to 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and multiple Grade 1 winner Dullahan, has been sidelined with a nondisplaced condylar fracture to his right front ankle after finishing sixth in the second race here Saturday, according to trainer Dale Romans.
“The prognosis is very good,” said Romans. “He should be able to race again.”
Thirtysevenliveson is a maiden 3-year-old colt by Giant’s Causeway out of the mare Mining My Own.
