Square Eddie’s first winner strikes at Hollywood

Grade 1 winner and freshman sire Square Eddie was represented by his first winner Thursday at Hollywood Park, as the 2-year-old filly Sprouts romped to a 5 1/2-length win in a maiden special weight event.

Sprouts picked up her first win in her second career start, setting the early pace and drawing off readily. She covered 4 1/2–furlongs in :52.45 over Hollywood’s synthetic Cushion Track.

A J. Paul Reddam homebred, Sprouts is out of the Group 3-placed Yankee Victor mare Ann Summers Gold and is from the family of Grade 2 winner Stancharry and stakes winners Dubai Sheikh, Whatcom Warrior, Up to Juliet, and Social Climber.

Square Eddie, a 7-year-old Smart Strike horse out of the stakes-placed El Gran Senor mare Forty Gran, stands at Vessels Stallion Farm in Bonsall, Calif., for an advertised fee of $5,000. He has 32 foals in his first crop.

Overall, Square Eddie won three of 18 starts and earned $856,019. He began his racing career in England, winning one of four starts, but scored a Grade 1 win in the 2008 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland in his first U.S. start and his first after being purchased by Reddam. He then finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and would go on to place in two other graded stakes before he was retired to Vessels Stallion Farm in early 2010. Square Eddie stood the 2010 season, but was then returned to training and set a track record for 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita in early 2011 before he was retired again later that year.
