The Spiral Jetter prevails in Bear Fan photo

ALBANY, Calif. – The Spiral Jetter ($18.80) was far back until turning for home when she unleashed a strong rally to win a three-way photo in the $75,900 Bear Fan Stakes on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.
Spring Heat set the pace in the six-furlong stakes for fillies and mares but weakened late after being pressured through early splits of 22.39 seconds for a quarter-mile, and 45.03 for a half.
The Spiral Jetter was seventh into the stretch, but jockey Julien Couton had her in the clear racing three wide and angled out through the lane. She kept coming and had her head in front at the wire, winning in 1:09.33.
Favored Isa Firecracker finished second, a neck in front of Vronilla Parfait, but was disqualified to third for interference. Alejandro Gomez aboard Isa Firecracker accidentally hit Vronilla Parfait with his whip in the late stages, resulting in the DQ.
The Spiral Jetter, a homebred daughter of Don'tsellmeshort who is owned by Percy Bruno, earned her first ever win in a sprint in the Bear Fan. She was exiting a fourth-place finish in a one-mile main-track allowance race at Golden Gate. Two starts back, she won a one-mile turf claimer here when entered for a $40,000 tag.
"She's versatile, and, to me, that's the thing," said trainer Andy Mathis, who owns a share of the mare with Bruno and John Gezon. "But she needs the right spot.
"She's trained really good, and I think the fact she'd been routing was helpful in the stretch."
The Spiral Jetter earned $45,000 for her first stakes victory. She has earned $224,705 with five wins in 17 career starts.
