Spinning Top lights up tote board in Tomboy Stakes

Spinning Top posted a major upset on Saturday at Belterra Park, winning her maiden in the $75,000 Tomboy Stakes for Ohio-bred 3-year-old fillies on turf and returning $77.60 as the second-longest shot on the board.
Meanwhile, Grade 2-placed Heavenhasmynikki, sent away as the heavy favorite nine days after finishing ninth in the Kentucky Oaks, finished fifth in her first try on turf.
Missap, the winner of the John W. Galbreath Memorial Stakes on last fall's Best of Ohio showcase program, was away alertly from her outside post in the field of seven, opening a two-length lead through an opening quarter of 22.85 seconds, and ticking off the half in 46.58. Heavenhasmynikki, who sat in second by a head over Keep the Ring, began to eat into the leader's margin and had pulled into a striking spot, within a half-length, through three-quarters. But she came no closer as Missap kicked on again, opening the lead back to two lengths in deep stretch.
Meanwhile, Spinning Top had been away last at the break under Carlos Villasana and was still sixth after three-quarters. She uncorked a furious rally, taking dead aim on the leader and getting up by half a length at the wire.
Missap held second by three-quarters of a length over Keep the Ring, who was a neck ahead of Ucantkeepup. It was another 10 1/2 lengths back to Heavenhasmynikki.
The final time for the 1 1/16 miles on firm turf was 1:41.45.
Spinning Top, a homebred for Imagine Racing, is trained by Troy Green. The filly had made four prior starts, all this year, with her best finish being a third in a maiden special weight on May 4 at Belterra.
