The Spinmeister draws post 9 as 3-1 favorite for Canadian Derby

Randy Goulding|Aug 13, 2014

EDMONTON, Alberta – The Spinmeister will break from post 9 as the 3-1 morning-line favorite in the Grade 3, $200,000 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park on Saturday. Post positions were chosen by representatives of the 11 horses entered in the 1 3/8-mile race at a brunch held at Northlands on Wednesday.

Mike Schayer, a brother of Joshua Schayer, one of the owners of The Spinmeister, made the call for the Kentucky-bred son of Heatseeker, who is coming off a 6 1/2-length romp in the $50,000 Count Lathum at Northlands on July 19. The Spinmeister is trained by Rob Chabot.

“We would have liked to have been a little closer to the rail,” said Mike Schayer. “But 9 is my lucky number, so we went with it.”

First out of the box was Lintlaw, trained by Floyd Arthur. Arthur’s close friend, trainer Monica Russell, chose post 7. He will be ridden by Ismael Mosquiera.

“Actually, Ismael was the one who picked the post.” said Russell.

Lintlaw is coming off a second-place finish in a first-level allowance race.

Consecrate drew the rail. She will try to become the first filly to win the Canadian Derby since Raylene beat Taiaslew in 2003. Trainer Greg Tracy, who trained Taiaslew, was happy with the post.

“There are 11 horses in the field, and they are all going to be trying to come over, so we might as well be there right from the start,” said Tracy.

Consecrate won the Northlands Oaks by 11 1/4 lengths in her last start.

Representatives of Hastings invaders Remembertobreathe and Off the Top chose posts 4 and 11.

Trainer Robertino Diodoro, who won the Derby with Broadway Empire last year, was pleased with post 8 for Edison. Edison, the second choice at 4-1, will be ridden by leading rider Rico Walcott.

“They are going a mile and three eighths, so I don’t think post position is that big of a deal anyway,” said Diodoro.

Other notables: Go Max, post 5; Private Money Game, 6; and Shootininthebush, 10.
