Spill results in 'no contest' for third race at Laurel

Jim Dunleavy|Nov 19, 2017

The third race at Laurel Park on Sunday was declared a 'no contest' following a one-horse spill nearing the first turn of the 1 1/16-mile race.

Leather Goods, with Alex Cintron aboard, appeared to clip heels and fell going to the first turn. With horse and rider still down on the track, the riders of the other six horses in the field eased their mounts in the final furlong while track outriders waved them to the outer part of the stretch.

Alex Cintron and Leather Goods both eventually got to their feet. Cintron was taken to the hospital with a broken nose, according to officials. Leather Goods was vanned back to the barn of trainer Hamilton Smith.

Wagers in the win, place, show, exacta, trifecta, superfecta, and Super Hi 5 pools were refunded. The race was treated as "all winners" in pick threes, the pick four, and the pick five.

A consolation daily double was paid on races 2 and 3. The daily double on races 3 and 4 was refunded.
