Spendthrift bumps Malibu Moon’s fee to $95,000 for 2014

DRF Breeding Staff|Oct 28, 2013

B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farms announced the 2014 stud fees for its 21-stallion roster spanning five states and provinces, with the most notable change coming for the operation’s marquee sire, Malibu Moon.

The 16-year-old son of A.P. Indy will be the only Spendthrift stallion to stand for an increased advertised fee in 2014, going up from $70,000 to $95,000. Malibu Moon had a banner year in 2013, as the sire of Kentucky Derby winner Orb. He was also represented by his first yearlings to sell for $1 million or more, with two going for seven figures at the Keeneland September yearling sale.

Six horses on the Spendthrift roster will stand for reduced fees in 2014. Line of David, whose first foals are yearlings of 2013, will stand for $6,000 after being offered for $7,500 during the previous breeding season. Notional’s fee will drop from $7,500 to $5,000. Tiz Wonderful will stand for $7,500 after posting a $12,500 fee in 2013. Tizway, who is represented by his first crop of weanlings in 2013, will see a decrease from $25,000 to $15,000. Finally, My Pal Charlie, who stands in Louisiana and is in the midst of his first crop of racing age, will have his fee reduced from $3,000 to $2,000.

All other stud fees on the Spendthrift roster remain unchanged from their 2013 rates.

Spendthrift will stand five new stallions in 2014. The Lexington, Ky., base will feature Awesome Patriot, a Grade 3-placed stakes-winning full brother to 2013 Preakness Stakes winner Oxbow, standing for $3,500; Grade 1 winner Jimmy Creed, who will stand for $12,500; and Grade 1 winner Liaison, who debuts for $10,000.

New stallions in regional markets include Grade 2 winner Freedom Child, who will be available at Country Life Farm in Bel Air, Md., for $3,500. Le Mesa Stallions in Carencro, La. will stand new sire Flashpoint for a fee of $2,500.
