Spencer leaves Ballydoyle job as main rider

Alan Shuback|Feb 07, 2005

Jamie Spencer has resigned as stable jockey for Ballydoyle, the internationally prominent Irish outfit overseen by trainer Aidan O'Brien.

Spencer announced his departure in a statement on Sunday. The move came after a year in which the 24-year-old Spencer came under frequent criticism, most notably for his performances aboard Powerscourt in the Arlington Million and the Breeders' Cup Turf.

In the Million, Powerscourt and Spencer crossed the line first but were disqualified for drifting in through the stretch. In the Turf, Spencer put Powerscourt on the lead more than a half-mile from home before fading to finish third.

Spencer was Ireland's champion rider last year, winning on 93 of his 361 mounts for earnings of $2.55 million.
