Speedy Soul tops Casse-trained trifecta in Fury Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Mark Casse swept the top three positions in Sunday’s $125,000 Fury Stakes, an important prep for the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks.
Speedy Soul parlayed an ideal stalking trip into a three-quarter-length score in the seven-furlong sprint for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies. Hastalavistababy came from last to finish a clear second over Western Curl, who went four-wide on the turn before finishing two lengths in arrears.
Intanga Rose, the 8-5 favorite in the seven-horse field, prevailed in a front-end battle with Silent Mistake before fading to fourth. She was followed by Malibu Dawn, Silent Mistake, and Artilena.
Patrick Husbands rode Speedy Soul, who was equipped with blinkers for this race at his recommendation after he worked her recently.
“She broke sharp,” Husbands said. “I just sat in between them. When I asked her at the top of the lane, she gave me everything.”
Speedy Soul ran the distance in 1:22.39, and paid $8.80 to win. The daughter of hot second-year Ontario sire Souper Speedy earned $75,000 in her second stakes win for owner-breeder Joey Gee Thoroughbreds.
The Woodbine Oaks will be run on June 8. The final stakes prep for the nine-furlong test for Canadian-breds is Saturday’s Grade 3 Selene.
