Speedy Soul takes another step forward in Bison City

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Speedy Soul put it all together over a route distance for the first time in Sunday’s $225,000 Bison City Stakes, which she won comfortably under Patrick Husbands.
Speedy Soul ($7) tracked the dueling leaders Bold Script and Intanga Rose in the second leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara, which was run over 1 1/16 miles. She took dead aim at them entering the stretch, and then hit the front with about a sixteenth left en route to a 3 1/4-length score in a time of 1:44.51.
The favored Bold Script finished second, and Intanga Rose faded to third in the seven-horse field of Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies.
Trainer Mark Casse removed the blinkers from Speedy Soul, who was coming off a prominent third-place finish in the nine-furlong Woodbine Oaks.
“The last time I rode her, the first quarter, I couldn’t get her to relax,” Husbands recalled. “I begged Mark to take the blinkers off. Today, when I left the gate, she was relaxed. It was only a matter of time. When we straightened up, I gave her the first lash, and she went on.”
Casse said the daughter of hot second-year Ontario sire Souper Speedy has been improving.
“She’s getting a little better each time,” Casse said. “She ran extremely well today, and we’re proud of her.”
Speedy Soul earned $135,000 for owner-breeder Joey Gee Thoroughbreds.
