Sparky Ville targets Lazaro Barrera Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. – Sparky Ville, the winner of the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes here in February, is scheduled to run in the Grade 3 Lazaro Barrera Stakes for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs at Santa Anita on May 18.
Owned by David and John Del Secco and trained by Jeff Bonde, Sparky Ville was sixth in the California Derby at 1 1/16 miles at Golden Gate Fields on April 27 in his only start since the San Vicente, run at seven furlongs.
“He’s a one-turn horse,” Bonde said. “That’s what he likes.”
On Friday at Santa Anita, Sparky Ville worked a half-mile in 52.80 seconds, his first work since the California Derby.
Catapult, second in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs last November, worked six furlongs in 1:14.40 on Friday in advance of the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile on turf May 27. Trained by John Sadler, Catapult was second in the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile on March 30.
