Sparkles' Girl gets class relief in allowance feature
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Sparkles’ Girl is dropping out of stakes company to contest Friday’s Woodbine headliner, a non-winners-of-two allowance for Ontario-sired 2-year-old fillies that is worth $47,500.
Sparkles’ Girl earned her diploma first time out by two lengths over a modest group of Ontario-sired maidens on Aug. 1. A month later in the restricted Muskoka Stakes, she attended the pace before fading in the final furlong to end up sixth in the 6 1/2-furlong test.
Sparkles’ Girl got back on track most recently Oct. 10, when she added Lasix in the restricted Victorian Queen Stakes. After breaking outward in the six-furlong event, she stalked three wide en route to a commendable third-place finish. The victorious Caren, one of the leading juvenile fillies on the grounds, came right back to capture the $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes in front-running style.
Sparkles’ Girl worked five furlongs in 1:02.40 on the Polytrack last Friday for trainer John Charalambous.
There also are two Ontario-sired maiden special weight events on Friday’s nine-race card, along with a good $40,000 claimer featuring Strawberry Scarlet.
KEY CONTENDERS
Sparkles’ Girl (Last 3 Beyers: 68-49-50)
◗ Her tactical speed should come in handy in this 6 1/2-furlong sprint. Regular rider Emma-Jayne Wilson has the call on the daughter of successful freshman sire Society’s Chairman, who is also the sire of Caren.
Frosty Vixen (Last 3 Beyers: 60-56-40)
◗ She was a troubled fourth at first asking against $25,000 maiden claimers before graduating with ease at that price three weeks later Oct. 7. The closer continued to improve her Beyer Speed Figures when she finished in a dead heat for second most recently in a $32,000 claiming race.
◗ Jesse Campbell inherits the mount from Wilson on the daughter of War Cry, who is a half-sister to Simcoe Stakes winner Fastin Bear.
Miss Forester (Beyer: 57)
◗ She came three wide from a stalking position to land her debut in a six-furlong maiden special weight race Oct. 11 and has since worked three times.
◗ She is coupled with Sparkles’ Girl in the CEC Farms entry. Trainer Ralph Biamonte has lured leading rider Eurico Da Silva, and they’ve partnered to go 10 for 45 at the meet.
Bella’s Ballerina (Beyers: 35-57)
◗ She nosed out Generous Touch for the win after setting the pace in her five-furlong debut but then came up empty in the Victorian Queen.
Generous Touch (Last 3 Beyers: 51-54-57)
◗ After dropping each of her first two starts by a nose, she won a seven-furlong maiden special weight race by 1 3/4 lengths on Sept. 26. Next-out winners Bella Fabiana and Neshama emerged from that race.
