Spanish Harlem's perfect trip wins Barely Even

Spanish Harlem got a dream trip under Emisael Jaramillo en route to a 1 1/2-length victory Saturday in the $75,000 Barely Even at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.
Rating patiently behind a quartet of longshot front-runners, Spanish Harlem glided to the lead turning for home before finishing the seven-furlong distance in 1:36.25 over a fast track. The winner returned $4.40 as the favorite in a field of nine fillies and mares who had never won a stakes.
Oola Gal was second and My Cousin Martha was third after both rallied from far back off early fractions of 23.43 and 45.88.
Spanish Harlem, a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred by More Than Ready, is owned by Midwest Thoroughbreds, the leading owner in wins in North America for seven straight years (2010-16). Trained by Armando De la cerda, the leading trainer at the current summer meet, the chestnut filly was coming off a sixth-place finish in the Grade 2 Princess Rooney when registering her fourth victory from 14 career starts.
The $2 exacta (9-6) paid $26.80, the $1 trifecta (9-6-4) returned $44.40, and the 10-cent superfecta (9-6-4-8) was worth $29.35.
