Spanish Decree just up in Jammed Lovely Stakes
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Spanish Decree nailed Mountain Orchid on the wire to capture the at Woodbine Sunday.
Spanish Decree raced four lengths off the dueling leaders, Whistling Maid and Mulrainy, in the seven-furlong dash for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds fillies. Mountain Orchid took control midway on the turn, and opened up a clear lead early in the stretch, but Spanish Decree closed three-wide to win by a nose.
Favored Mulrainy ended up third in the nine-horse field. The final time was 1:24.52 seconds.
"I thought it would set up really well for us," said winning rider Constant Montpellier. "We sat behind the pace, and just got up in time."
Spanish Decree returned $21.60, and banked $99,450 for owner/trainer/breeder Frank Huarte.
* Jockey Jono Jones swept the two supporting features on Sunday's card, both at a mile on the grass, winning the $114,000 River Memories Stakes with Byzantine, and the $115,000 Labeeb Stakes with Red Sea.
Byzantine ($34.80) split horses in deep stretch to prevail by a length over Strait From Texas in the River Memories, while Red Sea ($42.80) closed along the rail to beat Silver Spear by three-quarters of a length in the Labeeb.
