With dual classic winner Sovereignty, a lock to earn a divisional Eclipse Award and a strong candidate to be named Horse of the Year, leading the way, his sire, Into Mischief, continued his streak as the nation’s top stallion and his owner-breeder, Godolphin, looks to continue its own streak of awards, as well. Into Mischief, who stands at Spendthrift Farm, secured his seventh consecutive leading sire title by earnings in 2025, placing him in league with legends. He is the first stallion to secure that many consecutive titles since the legendary Bold Ruler, from 1963-69. Bold Ruler claimed an eighth title posthumously in 1973, the year his son Secretariat dominated the Triple Crown. :: Get the Inside Track with the FREE DRF Morning Line Email Newsletter. His 27 individual stakes winners were led by Godolphin’s Sovereignty, who won the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, along with the Travers Stakes, Fountain of Youth, and Jim Dandy. Sovereignty was a record-tying third Kentucky Derby winner for his sire, joining 2020 Horse of the Year Authentic, who won the pandemic-delayed 2020 Derby, and Mandaloun, who crossed the line second in 2021 but was later elevated to first due to Medina Spirit’s disqualification for a medication violation. Into Mischief is assured of another Eclipse Award champion on the season in Spendthrift colorbearer Ted Noffey, who won three Grade 1 races in an undefeated campaign, capped by the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Into Mischief also was represented in 2025 by Grade 1 winners Patch Adams, Tappan Street, and Tommy Jo. Godolphin bred Sovereignty out of its Bernardini mare Crowned, and finally secured the long-sought Kentucky Derby win for Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum’s international operation. As if that wasn’t enough, the day prior, another homebred, Good Cheer, won the Kentucky Oaks, making Godolphin the first sole owner-breeder to sweep both races since Calumet Farm in 1952. Adding to an unprecedented first weekend in May, Godolphin added the English 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas, with Ruling Court and Desert Flower, respectively. Godolphin’s other Grade 1 performers in 2025, in North America alone, included Notable Speech’s victories in the Woodbine Mile and Breeders’ Cup Mile; the globe-trotting Rebel’s Romance returning to the United States to win the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic before finishing second in his attempt at a third Breeders’ Cup Turf victory; and El Cordobes winning the Sword Dancer before finishing third in both the Hirsch and BC Turf. Overall, Godolphin led both the owner and breeder lists by earnings, graded stakes wins, and Grade 1 wins. It dominated the breeder list by graded wins, in particular, with 25 to nine for WinStar Farm. Godolphin is favored to be voted the Eclipse Awards as outstanding owner and breeder, looking to sweep both awards for the sixth consecutive year. Finishing second and third behind Into Mischief on the national sires list were Not This Time, who stands at Taylor Made Farm, and Gun Runner, who stands at Three Chimneys Farm. Not This Time, whose progeny earned $24,008,987 on the season, led the nation with 30 individual stakes winners. Those included turf Grade 1 winners Cy Fair, who won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint; Rhetorical, and Troubleshooting. The versatile stallion added a dirt Grade 1 winner in the final days of the year when Goal Oriented won the Malibu Stakes. Gun Runner, a Horse of the Year and Hall of Fame racehorse in his own right, checked in with $21,742,191 on the earnings list. His daughter Super Corredora won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, and she and Cy Fair are likely to be named divisional Eclipse Award finalists. Gun Runner’s son Sierra Leone, the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and a divisional Eclipse champion, was again a Grade 1 winner in 2025, and despite finishing second in the BC Classic, could possibly be an Eclipse finalist. Gun Runner also sired Grade 1 winners Brant and Locked in 2025. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
