SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Led by Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Sovereignty, a trio of contenders for the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes here on Aug. 23 put in workouts Saturday morning in Saratoga.  Sovereignty, in his first work since his one-length victory in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes on July 26, worked a half-mile in 48.64 seconds by himself over the Oklahoma training track, according to Daily Racing Form. Under regular exercise rider Neil Poznansky, Sovereignty left his stable pony at the 4 1/2-furlong pole and jumped right into his work. He went his first quarter in 24.28 seconds and, while kept a few paths off the rail in the stretch, he went his second quarter in 24.36 seconds. He galloped out five furlongs in 1:02.68.  “It was good,” trainer Bill Mott said. “Neil was happy with it. I just want him to come back good.”  Poznansky said the eagerness Sovereignty showed Saturday morning is typical of his morning drills.  “He does the same thing every time,” Poznansky said.  :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Sovereignty will have one more work next weekend, but Mott has not decided yet if that work will be by himself or in company.  About 90 minutes earlier, on the main track, Magnitude, the Iowa Derby winner, worked five furlongs in 1:01.22 in company with the claimer Shattuck. Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch had Magnitude in splits of 36.99 seconds, 1:01.20 and caught him in a strong gallop out in 1:14.09 and 1:26.55.  “Solid work, got a good blow out of it, if you’re going to beat a champion you better be ready,” said Scott Blasi, assistant to Steve Asmussen, trainer of Magnitude.  Magnitude shipped to Saratoga shortly after his powerhouse 9 1/4-length victory in the Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows on July 5 and has had four workouts here, three over the main track.   “We got him up here right after the Fourth of July weekend and he’s done really well in Saratoga,” Blasi said. “We hope he’s an up-and-coming horse. This is a big task we’re getting ready to ask of him, but we feel he’s up to it at this point.”  Jose Ortiz worked Magnitude on Saturday, but Ben Curtis, aboard for Magnitude’s victories in the Risen Star in February and Iowa Derby, will ride him in the Travers, Blasi said.  Strategic Focus, third in the Curlin Stakes here on July 24, was confirmed by trainer Chad Brown as a starter for the Travers. On Saturday, equipped with blinkers for the first time, Strategic Focus worked a half-mile in 48.60 seconds over the main in company with the multiple Grade 1 winner Chancer McPatrick, who is coming off a win in the Curlin Stakes. Chancer McPatrick is going to cut back in distance for the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens, a seven-furlong race on Aug. 23.  Speaking of Strategic Focus, Brown said, “My rider Kriss [Bon] thought he was a bit more focused. He felt more willing on his gallop out. It was a very solid work, very pleased with how he’s moving.  “I want to take a shot with the horse,” Brown added. “He’s lightly raced. I don’t think his numbers are far off to be competitive. I’m not saying I want to go after Sovereignty, I’m just saying I think he can be competitive in what could shape up to be a short field this year in the race.”  Brown said Flavien Prat will ride Strategic Focus in the Travers. Irad Ortiz Jr. is expected to ride Goal Oriented for Bob Baffert in the Travers. Goal Oriented, who finished third in the Grade 1 Haskell, worked seven furlongs in 1:23.80 at Del Mar on Friday.  At Churchill Downs on Saturday, Gosger, the Preakness and Haskell runner-up, worked five furlongs in 1:00.60. Trainer Brendan Walsh has mentioned Gosger as a possibility for the Travers, though he has not yet committed him to the race.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
