Sovereignty expected to work this weekend

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Sovereignty, the leading 3-year-old in the country and a Horse of the Year contender, was expected to return to the work tab over the weekend as he prepares for a start in the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 1 at Del Mar.

Bill Mott, the trainer of Sovereignty, said at Belmont Park on Friday morning that Sovereignty would likely work at Saratoga on Saturday morning. It would be his first work since his 10-length win in the Travers on Aug. 23. Sovereignty will enter the BC Classic having won the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Jim Dandy, and Travers in succession.

Meanwhile, Mott is making some plans for some of his other stakes performers, including Scotland, Syclla, and Quiet Street.

Mott said Scotland, second to Book’em Danno in the Grade 1 Forego, would be pointed to the Grade 3 Vosburgh at Aqueduct on Sept. 27.

“As long as we don’t have to run against ‘Danno,’ ” Mott said. “I don’t want to run against that horse again. He’s the most consistent sprinter out there.”

Scylla, second to Hope Road in the Grade 1 Ballerina, may start in the Grade 1 Spinster at Keeneland on Oct. 4. That decision “is in the conversation stage,” Mott said.

In the spring of 2024, Scylla won the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis at Churchill Downs at the Spintster distance of 1 1/8 miles.

Quiet Street, who won the Untapable Stakes at Kentucky Downs on Sept. 7, is being considered for a start in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

“She could go directly to the Breeders’ Cup if we think we can get in, if there’s a question, she’ll run in the Miss Grillo,” said Mott, referring to the Grade 2, $200,000 stakes at Aqueduct on Oct. 4.
