Sovereignty closes as 3-1 favorite in first Breeders' Cup Classic Future Wager pool

Barbara D. Livingston Sovereignty starts Sept. 18 in the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park, where he faces 2025 Classic winner Forever Young.

Sovereignty closed as the 3-1 favorite in the first of two Breeders’ Cup Classic pools offered by Breeders’ Cup and Keeneland, which hosts the event this fall.

The initial pool opened Friday, Aug. 28, and closed the evening of Sunday, Aug. 30. Breeders’ Cup said in a news release Monday that it handled $178,906 during the wagering period, and that Sovereignty would pay out at $8.04 in this pool should he win the Classic. The bet, which has a $2 minimum, features 23 individual wagering interests and a 24th option that includes all other potential Classic starters. A second pool runs Sept. 25-27.

Sovereignty missed the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic after contracting an illness that wound up dogging him through part of the winter. He finished second April 18 in the Oaklawn Handicap while making his first start since winning the Travers about eight months earlier, then took a step back with a flat third in the Stephen Foster on June 27 at Churchill Downs. He found his old form again on Aug. 8, when he won the Whitney at Saratoga, earning a 112 Beyer Speed Figure, the second-highest figure of his career.

Sovereignty starts Sept. 18 in the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park, where he faces 2025 Classic winner Forever Young, who closed as the 9-2 second choice in the pool. Forever Young hasn’t raced since March 28, when he finished second behind Magnitude in the Dubai World Cup. Magnitude ran poorly in the Whitney, finishing a distant sixth, and closed Sunday night at 11-1. Magnitude is not expected to race again before the Classic.

The first pool spanned the Travers Stakes, which was run on Saturday and included nine individual betting interests in Pool 1. The shortest price among them is Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo, who closed at 8-1 after a solid third-place finish while making his first start since winning the Belmont Stakes on June 6.

Leading Change notched a mild Travers upset while making just his third career start and closed at 18-1, a price that might have been lower had trainer Brad Cox made more of a commitment to running in the Classic. Cox instead named the 2027 Dubai World Cup as Leading Change’s only concrete upcoming goal.

The Cox-trained Commandment also was part of Pool 1 but won’t race again this year, Cox said over the weekend. Napoleon Solo, a close second in the Travers, closed at 35-1. His connections will decide between the Classic and the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

Knightsbridge closed at 9-1, Baeza at 12-1, both horses Bill Mott-trained stablemates of Sovereignty. Baeza runs Sept. 26 in the Goodwood at Santa Anita, while Knightsbridge, the last-start winner of the Pacific Classic, won’t run before the Breeders’ Cup but also is under consideration for the Dirt Mile.

The “all others” option closed at 17-1. The Lukas Classic on Sept. 26 and the Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 19 are the other upcoming races with Classic implications.
