Troubled trips against Grade 1 company worked against Southlawn in both the Kentucky and Coaching Club American Oaks, but trainer Norm Casse hopes a class drop will help her return to form in Parx Racing’s $200,000 Cathryn Sophia Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at a mile and 70 yards. The Cathryn Sophia is one of three undercard stakes on Tuesday’s Smarty Jones program with the $100,000 Parx Dash for 3-year-olds and upward at five furlongs on turf and the $75,000 Salvatore M. DeBunda Sprint for 3-year-olds at 6 1/2 furlongs. Southlawn burst onto the national radar when she beat Pretty Mischievous in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks on March 25. She then placed 10th of 14 in the Kentucky Oaks and last of five in the Coaching Club on July 22. “She had a really tough trip in the Oaks, and then obviously she fell on her face leaving the gate in the Coaching Club,” said trainer Norm Casse. “I think both of them are circumstantial, but she’s lost her mojo a little bit.” Casse said Southlawn emerged from the Coaching Club “mentally and physically perfect. Her coat looks great and she’s moving better than ever.” Foggy Night pulled off a 14-1 upset in the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks on July 1, then finished a distant second behind Occult four weeks later in the Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks. “She’s had to ship for every start the last couple, so I’m happy to be at home to run her out of her own stall,” said trainer Butch Reid. :: Bet with the Best! The Cathryn Sophia will be her first start for trainer Graham Motion. Promiseher America pulled off a 26-1 upset in Aqueduct’s Grade 3 Gazelle on April 8, then had a very tough trip in the Kentucky Oaks. She split the field when fifth in the Monmouth Oaks, her first start following a 2 1/2-month layoff. Awesome Pic and Yesternight should show speed. Miranda’s Rocky leaps up in class seeking her fourth straight win. Majestic Creed owns the best last-race Beyer Speed Figure, an 87 earned when winning an off-turf $25,000 starter allowance at Parx. Parx Dash Once a speed-crazy performer, Alogon has learned to relax. Those new-found tactics helped the gelding cash in from a perfect pace-tracking position behind a wicked pace battle in Monmouth’s Wolf Hill Stakes on July 22. “It makes him a lot more versatile,” trainer Ned Allard said in the Wolf Hill winner’s circle. “I felt real good the whole race.” Alogon should get a fast pace to attack once again in the Parx Dash with speedsters such as Nobody Listens, Pirate Rick, and Yes I Am Free all scheduled to compete. Fore Harp, a potential pace presence, will scratch to run in Monday’s Marshall Jenney Handicap at Parx, per Reid. Yes I Am Free was the beaten favorite in his last two races, but he took a quality field all the way when winning the Grade 3 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint for the second consecutive year on Feb. 11. Surprise Boss get huge class relief after trying reigning Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Caravel in the Grade 1 Jaipur. He was Grade 3-placed sprinting on turf at Saratoga last summer. Kentucky-bred Boat’s a Rockin showed his affinity for this turf course when second in last fall’s Grade 3 Turf Monster. He exits a gritty front-running score in a starter allowance at Colonial Downs on Aug. 10. Just Jeremy was part of the Wolf Hill pace barbecue; Patriarch Artie must overcome a recent tendency to break slowly; Alexis S also is entered. Spun and Won and Ebben run main-track only. Salvatore M. DeBunda Sprint Joey Freshwater faced tough competition in New York after taking the Grade 3 Bay Shore at Aqueduct on April 8. Fourth in the Grade 3 Dwyer and second in the off-turf Quick Call, Joey Freshwater exits a disappointing effort in a second-level allowance at Saratoga on July 29. To be fair, Joey Freshwater was the only 3-year-old in that salty race, and he’ll face peers-only competition in the DeBunda. Gordian Knot, a multiple stakes-winning Pennsylvania-bred, would provide strong competition to Joey Freshwater, but he is not certain to start having also been entered in Monday’s Banjo Picker Sprint against older statebreds. No Confession should appreciate dropping in class after facing Smarty Jones morning-line favorite Salute the Stars in Monmouth Park’s Pegasus. Likewise, Awesome Strong was in a bit too deep when last of eight in the Grade 1 Haskell. Both horses have proven sprint form Stud Lovin is an interesting new face from Kentucky; Praetorian Guard has put it together in his last two starts against allowance company; Depoli also is entered. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
