Southern Fire kept Liberty Lover from winning his fifth straight race Saturday, when he upset the $85,000 Pepsi Cola at Sunland Park at 30-1. Southern Fire was a 3 1/2-length winner over Lux, who finished a neck in front of third-place finisher and favorite Liberty Lover.
Southern Fire ($63.20) raced in fifth early as French Lyon took the field through an opening quarter in 21.87 seconds and a half-mile in 44.33. Southern Fire darted clear to cover the six furlongs for 3-year-olds bred in New Mexico in 1:09.88.
Elvin Gonzalez was aboard the winner for Judge Lanier Racing and trainer Simon Buechler.
