South Korea: Crown Pride, Remake earn Breeders' Cup berths

Steve Andersen|Sep 08, 2024

The Japanese shippers Crown Pride and Remake each won Group 3 races on dirt for the second consecutive year in Seoul, South Korea, on Sunday to earn automatic berths to Breeders’ Cup races at Del Mar on Nov. 2.

Both winners are trained by Koichi Shintana.

Crown Pride won the $1.07 million Korea Cup at 1 1/8 miles to earn a berth in the BC Dirt Mile. Remake won the $941,400 Korea Sprint at six furlongs to secure a berth in the BC Sprint.

Anarchist, a graded stakes winner at Del Mar and Woodbine in 2023, finished third in the Korea Sprint under California-based jockey Edwin Maldonado. Trained in California by Doug O’Neill, Anarchist (9-2) disputed the pace with Jaspar Krone before fading through the stretch to finish eight lengths behind Remake.

Ridden by Yuga Kawada, Remake ($2.40) closed from well off the pace to finish two lengths clear of Jaspar Krone (13-1) in the field of 15.

Remake was timed in 1:10.30. The Korea Cup was his first start since a fourth-place finish in the Group 1 Golden Shaheen Sprint in Dubai in March. A winner of 9 of 18 starts, Remake won the Group 3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint, a $1.5 million race at six furlongs, in Saudi Arabia in February.

Crown Pride, 13th in the 2022 Kentucky Derby, led throughout the Korea Cup, winning by five lengths over Wilson Tesoro, the 1-5 favorite. Wilson Tesoro finished five lengths clear of 11-1 Global Hit in the field of 11.

Crown Pride, ninth behind the American-trained Senor Buscador in the $20 million Saudi Cup in Saudi Arabia in February, won the Mercury Cup at Morioka Racecourse in Japan on July 15 in his last start.

A 5-year-old by Reach the Crown, Crown Pride was timed in 1:51.80 and won for the sixth time in his 17th start.
