South Korea: Breeders' Cup berths on the line in pair of stakes

There are familiar names among the contenders in two seven-figure dirt stakes in Seoul, South Korea, on Sunday that offer berths for the winners to Breeders’ Cup races at Keeneland on Oct. 31.

Diktaean, an 8-year-old Japanese-bred gelding, won the Korea Cup at 1 1/8 miles in 2025 and is part of a field of nine in Sunday’s race, which has a purse of $1.17 million. The winner receives a fees-paid berth to the BC Dirt Mile. Diktaean did not start in the 2025 BC Dirt Mile.

Diktaean, a winner of 11 of 33 starts, has raced three times since the 2025 Korea Cup. He was third in the listed Teio Sho at Oi Racecourse in Tokyo on July 1 in his last start.

In the Korea Cup, Diktaean faces two notable Korean-based runners in Big Musical Style and Clean One and a formidable Japanese shipper in Sunday Funday.

Big Musical Style has won his last two starts in handicaps at 1 3/8 miles in May and 1 1/4 miles in June.

Clean One, a winner of 7 of 11 starts, has won his last four starts, including three group-level stakes in Korea. Clean One is a Kentucky-bred by Bernardini who sold for a mere $22,000 as a yearling at Keeneland in 2023.

Sunday Funday has won two of his last three starts at 1 1/8 miles and 1 1/4 miles.

Korean Sprint

The $1.032 million Korea Sprint at six furlongs on Sunday includes 2025 race winner Self Improvement and American Stage, who was fourth in the BC Sprint at Del Mar last November. The winner of the Korea Sprint receives a berth to this year’s BC Sprint.

Self Improvement is based in Hong Kong and has not started since he finished last of 12 in a six-furlong handicap at Sha Tin Racecourse there in April. Self Improvement did not start in the 2025 BC Sprint.

American Stage is winless in five starts this year, a span that includes a second- and third-place finish in turf sprints in Japan.

The Kentucky-bred filly Knicks Go Won has won her last two starts and takes a significant jump in class for the Korea Sprint. Knicks Go Won finished first in a seven-furlong handicap at Busan Racecourse on July 12 in her last start.
