Souper Hot denies Souper Success in Bold Ruckus

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Souper Hot dug in gamely to beat out the favored Souper Success in Sunday’s $100,000 Bold Ruckus Stakes at Woodbine.
Corduroy Road rallied for third, giving the hot young sire Souper Speedy a sweep of the top three positions in the six-furlong turf sprint for Ontario-sired 3-year-olds.
Souper Hot ($9.50) tracked the leading Souper Success through moderate fractions. They proceeded to duke it out through the stretch, and Souper Hot prevailed by a neck in a time of 1:09.42 over the firm ground.
Society’s Tiger finished fourth in the six-horse field. Fifth-place finisher Bourbon Stritta was declared a non-starter after it was deemed by the stewards that he had an unfair start.
Eurico Da Silva rode Souper Hot for trainer Mike Mattine, who sent him out to finish a close second in last year’s Bull Page Stakes on the Tapeta.
“He was running so light, like a feather,” Da Silva said. “He was loving the ground. The turf was in perfect shape. He was running so easy. I loved the way he was going. I knew turning for home that we’d have a big shot.”
Souper Hot banked $75,000 in his first stakes win for owners Carlo D’Amato and Stacey Van Camp, who were also recording their first stakes victory.
“It was worth the wait,” said D’Amato. “Hopefully, it won’t be the last one.”
