Souper Hoity Toity edges Vergara in final strides of Ontario Colleen

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Souper Hoity Toity caught the sharp Maryland shipper Vergara in the last jump to win the Grade 3 Ontario Colleen under Patrick Husbands on Saturday at Woodbine.
Fresh off a victory in her season opener in the Grade 3 Selene, Souper Hoity Toity bided her time in mid-pack about five lengths off the early lead in the one-mile turf route for 3-year-old fillies.
Souper Hoity Toity lost ground on the turn before closing between rivals in the stretch and then kicked in nicely in the final furlong to prevail by a head, in a time of 1:35.01.
Favored Ladywearsthering was pressed by longshot Guileful up front before dueling with Vergara through the stretch, and then weakened late to finish third. Love to Run wound up fourth in the nine-horse field, from which Join the Dance was scratched.
Husbands said Souper Hoity Toity came off the bit on the turn before getting back into the race in the stretch.
“She got gutsy by the eighth pole,” Husbands said. “When I got by the eighth pole, she was a different horse. She loves to win.”
Souper Hoity Toity ($10.30) earned $90,000 of the $153,400 purse for Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Plantation. The Kentucky-bred daughter of Uncle Mo is trained by Mark Casse.
